Origins

Grimlock’s name and alternate mode homage the leader of the G1 Dinobots, Grimlock. Other than his name and mode, however, there is little resemblance between the two.

Description

Grimlock’s Tyrannosaurus alternate mode is extensively detailed with a robotic skeletal design theme. His entire upper body, back, and head are plated in chrome, though the lower back and tail have a bronze color painted over the chrome. He features highly articulated legs and forelimbs, as well as an opening jaw. He features numerous detail parts cast in a soft rubber such as his teeth, fictitious horns, and even ribs. His torso is somewhat flat and elongated, however, an artifact of his transformation scheme.

Grimlock’s forward torso is split in half, and each half is turned inside-out to form his long lower legs. His rear torso slides together to become the chrome robot torso, and the hind legs become his powerful-looking arms. The T. rex head splits in half and pivots up on a long arm to set upon his shoulders like epaulettes.

In his robot mode, he sports a huge amount of chrome, including his entire chest, the inner halves of his legs, and his shoulder guards. He is quite tall and lean, with broad shoulders which are decorated by soft-rubber belts resembling a tribal necklace or ammo bandolier. His feat have sharp upward points at the toes, somewhat resembling the pointed toe of a medieval sabaton. His head features a flared helmet look, covering most of his dark face. He has one long, pointed crest at the center of his forehead. In this mode, he wields the dinosaurian tail unfolded into a large spiked club. The large painted-over chrome panel from his lower back unfolds into a spiked buckler shield, which attaches to the T. rex foot on his forearm.

Collector Notes

Grimlock has the benefits of modern construction techniques, including re-attachable joints and soft rubber or delicate parts. However, he has some minor design faults. The large rectangular peg that holds his shoulder joint together is covered in vacuum-metalized chrome, as are the sockets it plugs into. Unfortunately, the joint’s tolerances were not designed with this in mind, so the joint will be too tight until the chrome has worn off of the contact areas. This also means that a single transformation will be enough to scrape the chrome in this area. The Tyrannosaurus’s forearms detach easily with pressure, to prevent joint breakage. Due to their size, however, they may become easily lost, especially since they are not visible at all in robot mode.
