Toy "secrets"

hmm you can attach motormaster, onslaught, hot spot, and silverbolt to metroplex to make a "super city" mode
though you're really only supposed to attach silverbolt (in ramp mode) and hot spot (repair bay mode) (process detailed in the japanese instructions, which us instructions don't have), metroplex has slots for all four to connect.

Yeah, Trypticon can only use motormaster and onslaught. I recall reading somewhere that Metroplex was designed before trypticon, and as such metroplex was supposed to be able to do "scramble city" with the four gestalt teams (aerialbots, combaticons, protectobots, and stunticons). However they did the toy design before the plot lines were laid out for which gestalt teams would fall under which factions (autobot, decepticon).
Finally when the gestalt teams had factions, they realized trypticon didn't have any attachments whatsoever, so they added those "L" connectors to him to give him that ability.
You can see that they changed their intentions sort of last minute for trypticon, because whereas metroplex has molded slots for the four gestalt leaders built into the toy frame, trypticon does not, and you need the somewhat awkward L connectors to attach only two, instead of four.
japanese trypticon instructions apparently actually incorporate those L connectors into the t rex mode, where exactly i'm not sure.
yeah i'm fascinated by something as somewhat trivial as this because I've had trypticon since I was 6 or 7 years old (still complete, word) and didn't know he could do that until relatively recently
