You know, I would really love a motorbike. I would buy one if it were practical for me, but unfortunately, I wouldn't even have a place to store it, really. We don't have a garage, and I'd be too paranoid to leave it out in our driveway ... plus, with the winters we get here, it probably wouldn't be the smartest thing to have. I keep thinking it would be awesome during the summer months, and it would save me a ton of cash that otherwise goes to my gas-guzzler ... *sigh*.
But, yeah $13 a gallon is completely absurd. We hit $4 here and everyone went nuts. I can't imagine the uproar if and when we get up there with you Brits...

My motorcycle saved me around $200 a month. My truck loves to eat gas, so having a motorcycle is a good investment. I would ride my bike, but there are a few conditions why I dont. 1- too far to go to work. 2- too many crazy people driving my direction, one accident a week on my route. 3- I only have a BMX, so riding that 18 miles a day would really suck.

We have to have 2 four wheel drives because of our jobs. Derick has a Land Rover 110 and I have a Land Rover Discovery. The advantage that we have is that we both run on sunflower oil it costs 34p a litre and goes much further than diesel. Sadly the tractors dont like it so we use " red " diesel and even that is 75p a litre now.

Thing is, europeans also typically make more, plus a lot of places in the EU have public transportation available. as for US public transportation...
I can't recall if it was GM or chrysler, but one of those two companies bought a city's entire trolley/streetcar infrastructure and took it apart. just bought and dismantled it. So they could sell more cars.

Well I do have access to public transport for my commute to work, but the price of it (£1.50 each way) means that by the end of the month I have actually paid more then I would for petrol for the car. Also the car is more stylish!

I can't believe I thought Cassettes were the way of the future.
Is +1 on Kups list.

That's the problem with the US. We're too greedy. our plant workers are greedy and always want more then they make enough. There's no reason why ALL cars can't get upwards of 40 miles per gallon, the only reason we're not doing it is because the car companies would lose money.
I happened to see a commercial for Dodge the other day. You can really see that our interests have changed because they were giving a big percentage off on the big gas guzzling trucks and SUV's. It was like 20% or so off of the MSRP.
