Did you know that Transformers are NOT in the Toy Hall of Fame? Strikes me as odd. Maybe the line isn't as old as the frisbee, hula hoop, G.I. Joe, and other toys like that. Oh well, just wanted to point that out.

Lets have a poll while we're at it: Should The Transformers be inducted to the Toy Hall of Fame?

If you all knew this already, shame on me.

I think it's got a good chance of getting there soon. I mean, it's gone from a semi-popular cartoon and virtually unknown comic to a mega-popular blockbuster movie.

And yes, the comic is virtually unknown.

I agree with PrimeDirective.
Perhaps Transformers isn't there yet, but I think it must be getting closer.

another problem is that transformers wasnt a new idea even in the 1980's hasbro bought stole and clawed rights for most of the molds. That could have alot to do with it..........

Good point Bumblebee. That could be why. But still, 25 years later and having a large fandom......It must be getting close. (We hope :) )

Nope. Lots of toy robots came before and the gimmick of transforming robots wasn't new or unique to Transformers. If Transformers is in, what about Shogun Warriors, Gobots, Micronauts, Robotech, Voltron, and Power Rangers? One might argue that 'Transformers' tends to be the catch-all title for robot toys, like 'Legos' covers any plastic blocks to most people, but I don't think brand recognition is enough.

Off the top of my head:
Atari 2600 wasn't the first video game system.
Barbie wasn't the first doll.
Duncan didn't invent the yo-yo, he just bought the marketing rights.
Tonka trucks weren't the first or only toy trucks.
Legos were essentially ripped off of a product called Kiddicraft Building Blocks.

Of the toys you mentioned, only the Power Rangers truly have a shot at the THOF, barring some miraculous change in the others' fortunes (such as the rumored Voltron movie spurring a rebirth. And yes, I know Robotech/Macross has a pretty obsessive following... but from a kids' perspective, the line was an utter flop.)

From the THOF website:
Q: What are the criteria for selecting toys for the National Toy Hall of Fame?

A: Inducted toys are selected on the basis of the following criteria:
1. Icon-status: The toy is widely recognized, respected, and remembered.
2. Longevity: The toy is more than a passing fad and has enjoyed popularity over multiple generations.
3. Discovery: The toy fosters learning, creativity, or discovery through play.
4. Innovation: The toy profoundly changed play or toy design. A toy may be inducted on the basis of this criterion without necessarily having met all of the first three.

Transformers definitely hit on 1-3. Number 4 could be argued, but I think HasTak has done enough to qualify under 4 as well. The rest have no shot, except just *maybe* the MMPR if they manage to annoy me for a few more incarnations.

Oh, and incidentally, Nintendo Game Boy is the ONLY toy in the THOF that was created AFTER the Transformers. Almost everything else is significantly (at least 10 years) older. I believe the Atari 2600 is the only thing under 10 years older, debuting in 1977.

Really? I'm also tempted to go see if it's true.
It might not be "Hall of Fame", but Transformers in a museum would be pretty cool. :)
