I have Matchbox and Hot Wheels in other cabinets. I used to be a Matchbox only collector, but since 2003 I opened the spectrum to other brands. Runner up in preferences is Tomica, but is very close to take the lead.

are ALL those boxed ones imported from Japan, or were they available in that packaging locally?

Unfortunately, Tomica has left the Western world overall in 1994, and that was only in the UK. Here they are gone from the 80s, and so it was on the US. The last Tomica I purchased in retail was in 1986, and I believe that was old stock. In the rare event I find one locally, it's on the secondary market, at higher prices. Most of them come from Hong Kong and the US. Japan has a good share of rare Tomicas (actually the best), but outbidding Japanese collectors is very expensive.

Back then however, they were available locally in boxes, instead of the "Pocket Cars" blisterpack they had in the US.
