Are the G1 missiles supposed to actually fire?
I always thought they didn't, someone else I was talking said they do.
Is it a mix? Some do some don't?

I believe that it tends to come down to the territory that the figure was released in. Someone else here is sure to be able to offer more info on it.

depends on the figure.
I think the original G1 seekers had working launchers but the G1 dinobots launchers don't fire there missiles.

The original G1 series are supposed to fire the missiles, but for safety reasons with little strength.
My own experience is that some of them actually can shoot their missiles pretty far, still not as hard as a Japanese reissue or a KO toy, but I think it has to do with the life they previously had. Springs get strained with use, and they "rest" when they are unloaded. For example, Wheeljack, Mirage, Hoist, Camshaft do shoot pretty far, but Trailbreaker, Ironhide, Sunstreaker, Prime don't. Of the mentioned, I can outline that Hoist is quite playworn, and Trailbreaker is near mint. I can only guess that Hoist was often played and spent time with no projectiles loaded after they got lost, and Trailbreaker was continuously standing with all accessories on.

I've always wondered this as well.
I don't remember ANY of my G1's when I was a kid being able to fire.
And the G1 Jazz I have now dosn't even have a spring in the launcher.

The way I remember it, none of them ever fired, at least to any great distance, whatsoever.

some customizing with a ballpoint pen spring will soon fix that little problem ...........
