not quite your favorite

When people ask you which Transformers toy is your favorite, do you think they mean "which of the Transformers toys you own"?

DO you limit your possible answers to ones you own?

What about ones you used to own?

What about ones you never owned, but have handled? (Maybe, for example, your neighbor had one you didn't and you got to play with it sometimes.)

What about ones you have only seen in stores or in ads or online?

What about Transformers collectibles that some people don't consider toys, like Masterpiece, Device Label, watches, Robosen, statues, Transformers Monopoly pieces, Attacktix, video game skins, Lego models, etc.?

What about Tonka GoBots, which are only Transformers by retcon? What about pre-Transformers like Diaclone and Microman/Microchange?

What about pieces that look like Transformers characters but aren't made or licensed by Hasbro or Takara/Tomy?

I take that as an all-encompassing question. For me, we didn't have a ton of money, but I was still spoiled enough to get quite a decent little collection.
As a kid, when the Stunticons rolled onto the scene, challenging the autobots on the road with their slick style and serious attitude "...a flying car, how drole!" I was sold, these guys were my favorite....until a banished Starscream visited a desolate beach and uncovered some very old vehicles, turning them into his army of revenge. A rugged group of unique vehicles - those dark colors, tactical weapons, and combining into one of the most fearsome, powerful and let's face it - coolest looking combiners ever.

Alas, I was never able to get a single Combaticon as a kid, but over 30 years later I was able to finally get my hands on him.

Ah, but did you get your hands on a G1 Bruticus, G2 Bruticus, Energon/Universe Bruticus (Maximus), Kre-O Bruticus, Combiner Wars Bruticus, Unite Warriors Bruticus, or Age of the Primes Bruticus? or an unlicensed, non-Hasbro, non-TakaraTomy product that looks like Bruticus? or Battle Gaia, Baldigus, or Ruination? and is your favorite one you own or one of those redecos? (or do you own all the redecos?)

That answer is definitely one I try to tailor to the audience. For a "filthy casual" who won't be able to discern a nuanced answer, I'll just land on Ultra Magnus, as he's well-known enough, and I like his G1 character, and most of the main toys he's gotten over the years (and also our own dear admin here - great guy, that Magnus!)
For a Transformers fan, I might ask them to clarify the question, and provide additional parameters. Are we talking toys? Fiction? What era?
For a TF fan and friend, I'll probably be a complete pedant with the above line of questioning, and try to come up with some off-the-wall answer and justify it with an argument or debate.

A fun punchy answer I'd give for Favorite > toy > all eras is HFTD Breacher. What an incredible little figure, for like $5 back in the day! Talk about value for your money: Looks great in both modes with minimal robot kibble, no faux wheels, rotating/elevating turret in armored truck mode, tons of poseability, fun interchangeability features like mounting the cannons on his arm OR fist, using his arm panels as handheld shields, and so on.

Also, come on Rhymus, nobody's favorite is Battle Gaia. Only guy who says that just wants to flaunt the fact that he has that ridiculously rare and expensive thing!

Wheeljack............always the answer.

He's got a cool robot mode, flashing lights when he speaks- wings in the back- and goodness knows you can't go wrong with his G-1 alt mode, an under-sung Italian sportscar-the 1978 Lancia Stratos-all dolled up in non-copyright infringing Alitalia labels.

Wheeljack likes to tinker and fix things, and at times those things tend to blow up beautifully.

It broke my heart to see him as a casualty in the '86 movie, and even worse that we did not get to see his end, because I am sure it was a valiant, self-sacrificing one.

Thankfully there have been many re-incarnations of the character in several different toy lines and shows.

Now...if we're talking transformers that turn into critters, I'm going to pick Ravage. He is just the perfect looking character in the cartoons, kind of meh in "real life" robot form until you put the canons on him, but he can't help it if he has to hang out in another guy's chest until needed because he has to share that compartment with at least four other tenants at any time and room is an issue. If he's good enough to be a leash pet for The Baroness, he's good enough for me.

A Three's Company type sitcom would be great with Soundwave and all his cassettes. My favorite episode would be the one with the "misunderstanding" with Rumble and Frenzy kicking it off.

You're 100% right though... Although turn anything into a Lancia Stratos and I'm game!
