Recovering Rusted Trypticon

Ok, I took Trypticon into the bathtub with me when I was a kid.
I admit it.
But now I want to attempt the awesome task of disassembling him and doing what repair work I can. I also was wondering if it's say to solder on the springy wire part of the battery compartment that came loose?

Any suggestions?

Also, what did those two right angle pieces do that he cam with?

there pretty useless actually they allow onslaught/hotspot/menasor/silverbolt to link to him. [A left over feature from what he was before trypticon.

Also, what was Trypticon before he was a transformer? O_o

I am not sure if he was released pre TF. Jose will know. I think you can connect the scramble city leaders [motormaster/onslaught/silverbolt/hot spot] to him becuase you can do the same with metroplex.

As for your repair job. I would recommned replacing the motors and battery holders completely. {but keeping the cogs in place.}

Oh dear. I have no idea how to do that, or where to find the parts. =/

The motors shouldn't be to oexpensive. If they are small enough, you can probably buy them at a hobby /rc shop. You would probably need them with you to compare the size. And welcome MC Breakdown!

Here's my rundown on this.
No, he was not pre-TF. Desz is right on the angle pieces, but they can also be attached as additional spines on his back, below the gray spines he already has. there are two holes each side meant for this... you'll figure out how cus they'll fit nice.
lastly, the motor is contained in a gearbox, which is nice for working on his innards, but it means that replacing the actual motor would be a pain in the ass. if you can get a new motor gearbox combo that'd be best.

Edit: I just recalled i have a spare parts trypsie bot i might be able to salvage some electronics and or metal off for you, i don't remember if he works though. (i'm up at school, i can check him when next i'm home)

Well, I fixed metrooplex, so I decided to start on trypticon. the inside of the motor gearbox is damn rusty, but I've been cleaning it the best I can. It's a small motor, very simple (thank god..). But the springs that fit in the small roung bits that stick out of his sides are rusted? Any suggestions for removing all this rust? I have been using an electric toothbrush, WD40, 3in1 oil, and even Fantastic.

White lithium grease will remove that orange rust from the plastic lickedy split! Just put a little on a Q-tip and let the grease sit awhile and then swipe it off. It'll take the rust off of metal too! (not if its pitted though)

I don't know if you'll want to use CRC spray white lithium grease because of its uncotrollability. The stuff goes everywhere even if you use a straw........but the stuff in a tub by Coastal petrolium is good. They've been in business since before cars became common.

Off topic but........

Coastal also made some of the most beautiful gas pump globes and signs of the 1920's and '30's.

Sadly, all of this replacement stuff will do little good if you don't de-oxidize the on/off switch contacts (which is the most frequent issue in my experience). You must break Trypticon down to itty bitty pieces to do so. Since you've got the motor out, I assume you've already done so. Do your best to pry open that on/off switch backer and use sandpaper to clean the contacts on both sides!

If you took him into the bath tub, I'd imagine there's a bunch of rust after all these years. This is where a multimeter would come in handy. They sell cheap ones at the Radio Shack for about $10. Hopefully your wires are still good!

Well, the motor is working, unfortunately, I seem to have left his springs in the vinegar too long. They're a little..thin. Anyone have any ideas where to find new ones or how to make new ones?

Im not sure what size they are, but r/c hobby shops sometimes carry that type of thing in various sizes.

Thank you all! I got him working again! I just have to get new springs, and some of the grey gun parts, the orange nose "cockpit thing", and the launch ramp, and he'll be complete!
