There's just so many variations, and I can never remember which is which. So help me! I can never remember if it's the leader class ones that are the best, or the Voyager. The Voyager one looks skinny, right?
So many Primes.
US releases, only. Buster Prime is nice but it's not worth all that money.

Get a Leader Class, for sure.
The best is the RA-01 Buster Prime, the Takara japanese release... can be pricey, but it's a decent investment. You could get him in the twin box set with the japanese Jetfire repaint too, which would give you a nice variant and a good value set. If you look hard enough, you should find this set for about £95 with delivery, which is a bargain if you ask me. [EDIT] sorry - just saw you were in the US, so you could probably get the set for about $135 US...
Other than that, my personal favourite is the first movie release nightwatch prime - he comes in two styles. The original (the one I have) is the one without the allspark blue extras added as a later variant. I prefer my original one which is much darker overall and has a Nemesis Prime look to him. He's leader class, so he's nice and big and not many people ended up buying him, so he'll turn out to be a lesser found one eventually.
Some of the voyagers are nice to have if you have money to burn and want to buy lots of versions of Prime - the G1 repaint style is quite nice if you can get him.
Hope you find one you like - I'm very happy with my Nightwatch one (i'll put some pics of him in my collection pics that I'll post in a while for everyone

Get the leader class prime from the first movie line. Its a lot more solid and posable than the ROTF leader as well as being easier to transform.
BTW: the ROTF battle hooks prime is junk as its going to be done with battle damage and probably soft rubbery plastic hooks. ~(its worse than the standard ROTF prime which looks bad enough.)
I personally have the takara buster prime version which is awesome. {and the black DVD prime is nice too but very pricey now. I'm glad I got mine direct from amazon.co.jp when he was offered.

i think 20th Anniversary/Masterpiece Optimus Prime looks more like the character from Transformers: The Movie than any of the other figures mentioned in this thread.
...Oh, wait, did you mean the 1986 movie, or the 2007 movie? ;-)
Actually, i had some questions that i think are similar to IDontThinkSoTim's, but more specific. (i'm assuming--but not certain--that except for adding Jetfire, Optimus Prime looked the same in the 2007 movie as he did in ROTF?)
Which toy looks the most like Optimus Prime did in the 2007 and 2009 live action movies?
Which toy transforms most like Optimus Prime did in the 2007 and 2009 live action movies? (Consider G1 Powermaster Optimus Prime's cab/robot: Although the cab mode and robot mode both look kind of like the original Optimus Prime's, the way the toy transforms is totally different.)
In your opinion, which Optimus Prime toy (that's supposed to represent the 2007/2009 movie character) looks the best?
Which Optimus Prime toy (that's supposed to represent the 2007/2009 movie character) is the most poseable?
Which Optimus Prime toy (that's supposed to represent the 2007/2009 movie character) is the most stable? (By "stable", i mean you can pose it, and it will stand up by itself. If the toy falls over in vehicle mode, it has problems. If the toy is mentally unstable, you may have problems.)
Which Optimus Prime toy (that's supposed to represent the 2007/2009 movie character) is the best value? (Of course, "best value" could mean different things to different people, but hit a few points in the money discussion: Maybe this figure is slightly better than that figure, but that figure only costs half as much, or something. i don't know, that's why i'm asking. Of course, i'm asking on behalf of IDontThinkSoTim, because even though i think live-action movie Optimus Prime has some neat toys based on him, there are other TFs that i'd buy first.)
And then--i guess this question may be what IDontThinkSoTim meant, and the question that most of you answered--in your opinion, which Optimus Prime toy (that's supposed to represent the 2007/2009 movie character) is the best balance between all of the above qualities?

One shall stand; one shall fall; and the one who stands shall help the one who falls to stand once again.

The RotF leader-class Prime is definitely the most accurate. I think the one Dez bought had some issues, because mine is definitely posable. Some of the arm movement is restricted by the swords, but when they're flipped out, it's less noticable. He's definitely the most accurate, by a pretty wide margin. He doesn't have a gun, unless you buy the Buster Optimus figure, but that's more of a collector's piece than something you'd play with.
Of all the primes I see movie and otherwise I like the look of the Transformers Optimus Prime (Titanium, 6-inch Cybertron Heroes, Autobot) and I am hoping to snag one to put next to my G1 prime.
