Guys,

I got her to run the Kaspersky online scanner and it started to scan and found 2 items and she was barely 5% into the scan. But it crashed at that point.

I think she is going to do a safe mode reboot and try to save her pics etc.

I think during the safe mode, we should try the scan again. only problem is Kaspersky or Panda active scan online don't fix the problems just find them. I know she uses AVG but that says her machine is clean.

any and all suggestions are welcomed and appreciated.

Well, it looks like I'll be posting from my laptop for the forseeable future. (And that means no more gaming for me.) *SOB.*

As Rodimus said, Kaspersky found 2 viruses like three minutes into the scan. Problem is, I wasn't able to see what those viruses were or where they're located before the computer crashed again. That said, I find it extremely frustrating that my AVG scan didn't detect anything.
I'm going to try safe mode tomorrow; honestly, I just had to leave it tonight for the sake of my own sanity. But it's looking more and more like I'm going to end up having to shell out a load of money (that I can't afford to be spending) on a new system. (Break pads? Shocks? Who needs THOSE?!)

*Sigh ... cry, whine.*

I'm not a big computer guy, but sometimes Spybot Search and Destroy will find things that AVG doesn't. Of course, if the computer keeps crashing, I don't know if you can download it.

As i told you earlier Arcee, in case it's a virus, remove the hard disc and connect it to your laptop.Without copying or running anything scan the disc with kaspersky or nod32 and do the usual spyware search. When it is done, try the disc again. If that doesn't work,it's format time.
Viruses also destroy vital system files and damage the registry.

Abominus
Couldnt she slave it to her laptop and run the antiviuis and repair the porblem without risk? I do think she will need to find some way of protecting her laptop. (use a roommates or friends computer  )

Arcee do you know anyone locally who could help for free I know everywhere has computer shops but there too expensive when most things you can do youself with the right tools. The easiest way but one that will lose everything is reformat. go to the computers dos and reformat the whole **mn thing

hdd problems

Post by Menasor »

actually of you slave it to the main hard drive and try to open it up its going to infect your other harddrive run them both on cable select that way its not using your main drive to open the slave it will open on its own without infecting your system

As far as i know, just connecting to the laptop won't infect anything.Needless to say,the antivirus and all other programs better be executed from the disk of the laptop.

My brother (who is quite techy) said that if I can't get it to work in safemode that he'd connect it to his computer and check it out for me. Though that's probably not going to happen for at least a few days until I see him, so I'm just kind of stuck in limbo for now.
I really appreciate all of your help and suggestions, guys. I was seriously starting to panic there. Thanks for taking the time to help me try and solve this.

connecting an infected hard drive to any other computer can spread the plagu (make the virus spread) so even hooking it up to your brothers computer can really mess things up. the best thing to do is find a techy friend who has spare computers laying around and hook it up to a junker and run a few different virus spamware and adware programs that would clean up all the garbage if its not to later. If that doesnt help then its time to clean off the drive completely then repair all the disks so before reinstalling windows youll have to run disk repair on it then install windows and you should be good to go.

I think he's hooking it up to a spare; my brother's extremely protective/paranoid about his own computer, so I doubt he'd do anything that might jeopardize its health.
I appreciate the lookout, though.

Actually, most viruses won't do anything unless they're loaded into memory, and they cannot do that connected to another PC. The best bet is to try safe mode first and use AVG to scan and destroy it. If you cannot do that, put it in another PC.

Arcee, if you can't find anyone willing to "mess" up their compy, you can always ship the HDD to someone and have them fix it, then ship it back. It's not hard to do.
