If it were unreleased how did he get one?

That is way too much for a toy much less a G-2 toy. That's like paying a million dollars for an Edsel to me.

I would however like to have the kind of cash he's asking for!

I call shenanigans. He's seen less than five? Guess what, one exists, and it's still with the other three! I've known about these guys for years, and I'm pretty sure they change hands rarely, expensively, and AS A SET... Clever scam, anyone?
The only G2 combiner proto of which multiples exist is Breakdown... the first botcon exclusive, back in '94!

I once saw an auction which said on title "Optimus Prime + others lot" and had a picture on listing, and I recognized one of the G2 Stunticons on the lot. Clicked to see in, and it was going already for USD 2,400+, with nearly 3 days left (I didn't look at the price early, LOL). However, in the lot were, besides other spinny G2 stuff and a Prime cab, all four G2 Stunticons, loose. I do believe that there are more than one of each four small G2 Stunticons and Protectobots, but I have never seen the leader of neither. My belief is that multiple samples may have been taken home by former Hasbro employees... And probably some were even played with! Note to self: Silly me, I should have asked the seller...

However, in average each of those G2 combiner pieces fetch USD 2500. This Blades is a bit more expensive, but definetely not for really silly money IMO.
