Forum Index Link

Okay--at first I thought I was just being paranoid, but this has happened for the third time now, so I need to bring it up.

Say you're in a thread, and you want to go back to the main forum index. When I've read all the posts on a page and have reached the end, I usually click on the "Transformerland.com Forum Index" link at the bottom to take me back. For the third night in a row now, when I click the link, my computer shuts down and resets itself.

Doesn't make any sense, right? I know. It doesn't happen all the time, either. Often I click it and it's fine, but for whatever reason, sometimes it's as though I have literally clicked a reset button or something: the monitor goes black, and the computer starts to reboot. I really, really don't get it. At first I just thought it was my outdated computer acting up, but like I said, this is the third time now that it has happened, and it is only ever when I click that link. I don't know. Has anyone else had this happen, or am I just going completely crazy on my own?
It's getting to the point I'm afraid to touch anything...

:? :? :(

Arcee, it sounds like something serious to me. I would do virus checks and the works, and if that doesn't fix it, I recommend you re-install Windows. My old 98 PC used to do that too.

AAAAAAAAHHH. Okay, it just happened AGAIN. That's the FOURTH TIME. I tried your suggestion, Blaster--ran virus/spyware checks and all that guff, but it's apparently not helped. From the time I joined the board until now, I have never had this problem. It's only started within the last week or so, and it is only ever caused by that specific link. So WTF? I'm going crazy, here. :x  :x

Try to clean out your cache and cookies and also your temporary internet files.

Then I found this:

There you are, working at your computer, minding your own business and doing nothing untoward, when suddenly--bam! The system stars rebooting. If you experience random reboots that have no discernible cause, here's a little trick that might take you a step closer to solving the mystery. In Windows 2000 and XP, right-click My Computer and choose Properties; click the Advanced tab. In Vista, click the Start button, type System, Properties, Advanced, and press Enter. Click Continue if prompted by User Account Control.

In all versions, click the Settings button under 'Startup and Recovery'. Uncheck the Automatically restart box, and click OK twice. The next time the problem occurs, instead of rebooting you will likely see a text screen reporting a system error. Jot down any information it contains and see whether you can find related information from your favorite support guru or Web site

After you do this, post whatever error messages occur here and we'll try to troubleshoot em.

Okay. I ran my antivirus, and it found nothing. I ran a Spybot search, and nothing. I ran Ad-Aware, and more nothing. I cleared all cookies and temporary files. I even did a defrag, just for the hell of it.

The result?

My computer rebooted four times today.

FOUR. That's a new record. A breakthrough, however, in that it occurred once while I was surfing a different webpage, so now I know that it isn't TFL that's causing the problem. I'm wondering if it's something to do with IE, because it only happens when I am browsing the net. If I'm gaming or I'm on MSN or something, it doesn't happen. Also, Blaster--unchecking the "Automatically reboot" box in the My Computer Properties hasn't put a stop to it, it seems. So, I don't know wtf to do now, or what the hell the cause of all this is. And honestly, I'm growing rather worried...

*Prays computer doesn't crash mid-session...*

EDIT: AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH. My computer just completely ****ing DIED after I posted that. I'm on my laptop right now. The computer rebooted itself again, except this time, as it was loading up the startup screen, it rebooted AGAIN ... then AGAIN ... THEN AGAIN. In other words, I can no longer even GET IN to the main screen to enter my password. I am ****ing pulling my hair out right now. WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON????

Arcee,

If you are willing to format your computer, use Killdisk. It will erase EVERYTHING and you will have to reformat again. The hard disk will be blank as it was when it left the factory.

I think it is looking more and more like reformat time. Her PC currently has windows 2000 on it (something I have been asking her to change for a long time).
She does have a lot of stuff she needs to rescue from on there, so hopefully later today when she tries, she'll be able to boot up at least and copy things to the second hard drive to retain her pics, music etc.

Thanks for your feedback guys, this is usually happening while I'm in bed and can't help.

In case the pc won't work, before formatting she can remove the hard disk and connect it to her laptop to backup the files with the appropriate equipment. The bad part is that if it's a virus, she won't get rid of it by backing up the files...

I know she has some critical files on there that need to be evaced before we go nuking things. I recommended piggybacking the HDD to a bootable system to get the necessary files... Anyone know if using safe mode might work? i know nothing about W2k...

Yes it should work but W2K does have a reset point in it also (If I rember correctly) If Im not mistaken she should try that 1st if not do slave the drive to something and pull off just the needed info due to if it is what we all fear then might corropt the format or even what it will be slaved to.
