Alright. Seeing how I'm the ignorant transformerland member who is just hear to spur random conversation and entertain myself through the many whims of our ever scary admin TT, I will try and learn some stuff by asking you all a few questions.
So here is number one: What is the best toy there is? Most expensive? Rarest? What series of makes are the most rare? And are the US releases better than Japanese or Asian releases?
Well... that was more than just one, but yeah. Enjoy those.

So... the Japanese releases pawn the US releases? Because they are that much better? When selling transformers, a Japanese one will go for more than a US one?
Also... who cares about prototypes? And why? What is their appeal?

Japanese releases are just US releases, plus more figures. There are even a number of figures that they got that were upgrades of ours. even to this day they do that. if you stop into the masterpiece optimus prime you can see the differences on that one from JP to US. and when selling figures that were the same here and there, JP packaging costs more. As for figures we didnt' get, they are disproportionately expensive just because they're japanese.
Prototypes: rich people and just some random collectors care about those. the appeal is that they are prototypes, one of a kind that somehow escaped corporate grip. they are always funny colors, and some have things that are sculpted a little differently than the production character. their uniqueness makes them valuable. back in '96 when i went to botcon, i saw a day-glow pink (with marbled look with a red) BW iguanas selling for $300. the character was new at the time, selling in stores for $5. ther aren't many G1 prototypes to be had, so g1 aside, teh only prototypes i'd most like to own were prototypes for the unproduced g2 reissue stunticons.

I can make a try to answer some of your questions:
Best Transformer? I may differ from many people. Just take a look at the discussion regarding "Best TF figure ever".To me the best are the original Op and Soundwave, for reasons I explained there, but just check out how many others are also considered the best.
Most expensive? I would take here my bet on going for those with most parts. Omega Supreme, Jetfire and Predaking are easily very expensive. However, here you can mix things with the scarce models, and here distribution plays an important role. Usually Overlords are quite expensive....Here! In Europe they aren't. Some Actionmasters are also expensive which never went out of Europe.
Rarest? Here I have one solid candidate: Bumblejumper. I don't consider prototypes on this cathegory, as other "one-offs" as well. I will stick with regular releases and Bumblejumper is easily th one which lasted the shortest in production.
And the best of G1 came from Japan, so to me they have the best stuff.
