repaint/varient
Ok, I see some terms thrown around a bit and was wondering if someone could clarify a bit for me. I was wondering what the difference between repaint and varient. Also more info as to what is considered a repaint. I would greatly appreciate any clarification.
Ok, let me give you what I think are the definitions:
Varient- a similar model released in the same "generation", but has slight difference. Sometimes it is done for cost cutting (Ultra Magnus rubber/plastic wheels), sometimes for fun (yellow cliff jumper & red bumblebee), and sometimes for governmental guilines (Masterpiece Megatron released with an orange tip in America. *)
Repaint- the exact same figure that was realeased previously, but is presented in different colors. Sometimes to add a new char with a new name. Sometimes to make a special edition of the figure.
To make sure I have this correct, please grade the following sentence for accuracy.
The Pepsi Optimus Prime is a Gen 1 repaint cab with a varient trailer.
Another question I have is I have sometimes heard that any figure that is released with the same name, but major differences in thier construction (ie: Gen 1 Optimus v/s classic voyager Optimus) refered to as repaints. Would this be an accurate term?
* No I have not seen this for real ... pure conjecture to the best of my knowledge

Lets see, you answered your own question with the varient as in a different color, or rubber wheels etc, etc.
The repaint would be along the lines of the G1 cab of you and Optimus Prime. That is a perfect example of a repaint. Same mold just a different color, cost cutting and all that.
The targetmasters of Hotrod,Kup,Blurr,Scourge and Cyclonus are varients as well. the only thing was the hand hole was made bigger to fit the peg for the Nebulan partner into.

To further expound on this, based on your cliffy/ bee example:
variant is two versions of the same figure, same line.
repaint tries to sell it as a separate character, like a "super" version, or whatever, or in a different series (ie. Beast wars depthcharge, Universe depthcharge.)
So even though cliff and bee are same casting different colors, they were packaged as the same toy, so they're a variant.
My affectionate term for repaints is mold-flogging.
They try to sell the same toy in every damn line with little to no modifications, and beat a dead horse. Like the modern cyclonus. armada helicopter, repainted as "powerlinx" cyclonus, then lightly remolded and sold as Cybertron cyclonus.
Note, however, that there is also a VARIANT... a KB Toys armada cyclonus had a slightly different color scheme.... however he was sold as the same character as regular armada cyclonus, not "powered up" or anything like that.

In my opinion "variant" is a wider term that includes "repaint".
And going in-depth through this, you can regard "repaints" as major variants as they are noticeable from far away.
Regarding mold alterations, most of the times they are because of cost-cutting, but also because of structural problems, safety concerns, etc.

Thanks, you guys did clarify it a bit for me. So the Voyager v/s Gen 1 Prime refered to as a repaint is a bit off, but I was pretty close on my other assumptions.
Oh, and it is definitely time for the TFL braintrust to gather the resources necessary for an Arcee costum build that transforms into the car not the cycle. I will gladly purchase the Gen 1 Wheelee and smash with a hammer as many times as it take to obtain the hood.

Not that it was a bad attempt by this guy, Just we need to remember that she has curves.
Oh, and any reason to destroy wheelie is good, he was like T-bot from M.A.S.K., or Jar-Jar Binks to me.

Holy box-swallowing Autobots, Batman! That's pretty bad, but it's sad to say I've seen worse.
Did you check out the links on the bottom of the page? I would kill for that Botcon Japan Arcee...
